In the heart of the Croatian wine world, the Kutjevo winery hosted a spectacular event that captured the attention of wine enthusiasts and experts from across the country. The grand finale of the first edition of Kutjevo Sommelier’s Choice took place on October 28 and 29 at the Kutjevo winery.
Twenty finalists participated, selected from over 300 applicants from four Croatian regions. The top five from each region were chosen after demanding regional competitions. This was not just a competition but also an opportunity for experts to showcase their incredibly diverse knowledge and passion for Croatian wines.
The festive finale brought together top bartenders, waiters, and passionate wine lovers who, like true enthusiasts, captivated everyone present with their impeccable taste and passion for wine. This event provides an opportunity to promote the best Croatian wines and the genuine passion behind each bottle.
The winner of the Kutjevo Sommelier’s Choice 2023 is Matej Grbac, a waiter from a prestigious Istrian boutique winery. Second place was secured by waiter Davor Jakulj from the Spinnaker restaurant in Kaštela, and third place went to Tina Opalic from Zagreb.
“I would like to emphasize the importance of events like the Kutjevo Sommelier’s Choice competition for the sommelier profession and raising awareness among the broader public about the world of wine. Personally, the competition has broadened my horizons, brought new knowledge, and contributed to further personal development. I thank the Kutjevo winery team for the overall organization, colleagues for the good company, and mentors for the quality preparation,” stated the competition winner, Matej Grbac.
In addition to a special gift from the highlighted winery, the winner received a substantial cash prize of €2000 and funding for the first-level course from the Croatian Sommelier Club.
